Day 1: Arrival in Schleswig
Arrive in Schleswig with enough time to enjoy the City of Culture and the Viking museum, ‘Haitabu’, on the Schlei. The waterways were of utmost importance to the Vikings who travelled to and from this area for trade purposes. Spend the night in Schleswig.
Day 2: Schleswig / Haitabu – Kappeln
Distance: approx 50 km / 31 mi
Today’s leg of the tour takes you through the old town, the historic fishing village of Holm, and along the Schlei. Cycle through the rolling hills of Angelns, Borderby, Lindaunis, and Arnis (Germany’s smallest city), to Kappeln. Stay overnight in Kappeln.
Day 3: Kappeln – Eckernförde
Distance: approx 55 km / 34 mi
Cycle south of the Schlei to Kopperby, Sieseby, and Missunde, following the route once used by Vikings. Continue to Eckernförde and spend the night there.
Day 4: Eckernförde – Owschlag
Distance: approx 45 km / 28 mi
Today’s leg of the tour takes you through the Hüttener Berge Nature Park, to Owschlag. The highest elevation near Owschlag is called the ‘Scheelsberg’ and reaches 106 m / 348 ft.
Day 5: Owschlag – Friedrichsstadt
Distance: approx 60 km / 37 mi
The Vikings used to move their ships on oxcart to Hollingstedt, sail down the Eider, and into the North Sea. Cycle part of the same oxcart route and continue to Friedrichsstadt. Spend the night there.
Day 6: Friedrichsstadt – Husum
Distance: approx 55 km / 34 mi
Cycle along the Eider, through marsh land, and across dikes to Tönnig. You can find out all you want to know about the Wadden Sea at the Mulitmar Wattforum Information Centre in Tönnig. Numerous bird species are found in and near the salt meadows. The ‘Haubargs’ (typical farm houses) dot the landscape on Peninsula Eiderstedt. Continue on the bicycle trail on the North Sea Coast to Husum.
Day 7: Husum – Schleswig
Distance: approx 55 km / 34 mi
The late poet, Theodor Storm, wrote a beautiful poem of Husum calling it “the gray city”. You can visit the Theodor Storm House or the maritime museum before continuing on today’s tour. Cycle the Eider-Treene-Sorge Trail to Hollingstedt. Northern Europe’s largest archeological monument called the ‘Dannewerk’ is located there. Continue on to the museum called ‘Danewirkegarden’ near Dannewerk and to Schleswig. Stay overnight in Schleswig.
Day 8: Departure from Schleswig
Depart after breakfast. Travellers are responsible for their own transportation home.
