Elbe River Cycle Route – Magdeburg to Hamburg

In just eight days explore five states in Northern Germany. Cycle the Elbe River Cycle Route in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hamburg. Spend the first night in imperial city of Magdeburg. Continue along the Elbe River to Tangermünde and Havelberg, to Wittenberge, Hitzacker, and Lauenburg. Last, but not least, cycle to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Experience the culture and hospitality there, and have fun shopping!

Elbe River Cycle Route – Magdeburg to Hamburg

Day 1: Arrival in Magdeburg

Travellers are responsible for their transportation to Magdeburg. You may like to explore the former imperial city in the afternoon. Spend the night in Magdeburg.


Day 2: Magdeburg – Tangermünde
Distance: approx 67 km / 42 mi

Cycle from Magdeburg along the Elbe meadows. Visit the lock in Hohenwarte and continue to Buch with its Roland statue and Dutch wind mill. Tangermünde is surrounded by an impressive city wall with many towers and gates. Spend the night in Tangermünde.


Day 3: Tangermünde - Havelberg
Distance: approx 54 km / 34 mi

Take the reaction ferry across the Elbe. Visit historic Arneburg and enjoy the glorious view onto the Elbe Valley. Cycle through the Altmark district to today's destination of Havelberg, one the oldest diocese East of the Elbe. You can see the Romanesque-Gothic church from the distance. Stay the night in Havelberg.


Day 4: Havelberg - Wittenberge
Distance: approx 42 km / 26 mi

Continue today through the district of Prignitz on trails along dikes and the Elbe River. Rühstädt is unique in that storks nest there more than in any other place in Germany. Today’s destination is the small town of Wittenberge. Spend the night there.


Day 5: Wittenberge - Hitzacker
Distance: approx 72 km / 45 mi

Cycle through the UNESCO biosphere reserve, “Flusslandschaft Elbe”, to Dömitz, Gartow, and Wittenberge. Admire one of the most remarkable fortifications in Northern Europe in Dömitz and the timber-framed houses and small fortress in Lezen. Spend the night in Hitzacker.


Day 6: Hitzacker - Lauenburg
Distance: approx 61 km / 38 mi

Today’s stretch takes you from Hitzacker to Boizenburg with its Art Deco Tile Museum, “Fliesenmuseum”. The view across the river is fantastic. The hills, steep river banks, and slopes are a great contrast to the otherwise flat landscape. Visit the Elbe Castle in Bleckede. Today's destination is the city of Lauenburg with its many timber-framed houses from the 16th and 17th century and the maritime museum. Spend the night in Lauenburg.


Day 7: Lauenburg - Hamburg
Distance: approx 55 km / 34 mi

Cycle downstream along the Elbe and through the vast lush Elbe Marshland. Today's destination is Hamburg.


Day 8: Departure from Hamburg

The world city on the Elbe River welcomes you and lures you to explore its 1001 activities such as shopping, visiting sights, the theatre, excellent restaurants, or even a musical. You may like to book an extended stay. Travellers are responsible for their homeward transportation.
