About the Region

The Saale is a left-bank tributary of the Elbe. The Saale originates on the slope of the Grosser Waldstein mountain near Zell in the Fichtelgebirge Mountains in Upper Franconia (Bavaria), at an altitude of 728 m / 2388 ft, and flows past Magdeburg near the small city of Barby.

The river flows through dark forests, narrow gorges, and picturesque reservoirs. The vineyard of Saale-Unstrut isn't large, but well known for its excellent wine.
