Elbe River Cycle Route
The Elbe River Cycle Route actually starts in Špindleruv Mlýn, a famous winter sport town in the Czech Republic. But in Germany, it runs north from the Sandstone Mountains (near Dresden and Prina) to the Wadden Sea at Cuxhaven.
The route is over 850 km / 528 mi long and runs through fascinating river landscape. Dresden, Meissen, the "Luther City" of Wittenberg, Dessau, Magdeburg, Wittenberge, Lauenburg, Hamburg, and Cuxhaven are all situated near the route. Favourite stretches are the Hamburg - Dresden tour and the shorter Magdeburg - Dresden tour. See our Elbe River Cycle Route map for more information.
The Elbe River Cycle Route is easily cycled as there are hardly any inclines. The German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC) elected it as the most popular cycle route in 2011.
About the Elbe Region
The Sandstone Mountains are a nature lover’s dream come true. The Elbe River Cycle Route offers the opportunity to experience the mysterious rock formations, mountain streams gushing out of jagged ravines, the table mountain called Lilienstein, and mountain peaks rising up from surrounding forest. It all comprises a unique scenery for cyclists and walkers alike.
Art and History
Nearly every visitor to the region visits the Königstein Fortress and the Bastei rock formation. Saxony, between Pirna and Meissen, allures visitors with its culture, art, and history. You'll find palaces, castles, museums, vineyards and wine villages, historic cities such as Meissen and Pirna, and typical pubs and restaurants along the Saxon Wine Road.
Experience Dresden
Last, but not least: Dresden. The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the Brühlsche Terrasse nicknamed "The Balcony of Europe", the Semperoper Opera House and Zwinger Palace, art galleries, and exhibitions are just a few points of interest worth visiting.
The Elbe River Cycle Route offers many highlights to visit between Bad Schandau and Meissen. The stretches are short and there is ample time to relax and visit the sights on our cycling holidays.
