Day 1: Arrival in Emden
Arrive in Emden by 5 pm. We look forward to welcoming you personally.
Day 2: Emden – Leer
Distance: approx. 35 km
Follow the leisurely paths from Emden to Petkum. Take the ferry (fare payable on-site) to the fishing village, Ditzum. The route takes you along the Ems River through Jemgum to Leer. There, you can enjoy the pretty Old Town, beautiful baroque architecture, and harbour.
Day 3: Leer – Papenburg
Distance: approx. 35 km
Cycle past numerous canals and moors. The landscape has a raw charm to it with picturesque bridges and rustic buildings. Papenburg is sometimes called "Venice of the North". The Meyer Wharf is a point of interest and is known for the building of cruise ships. If you'd like to visit it, please call ahead of time: 04961-83960. Day 4: Papenburg - Stadskanaal
Distance: approx. 55 km
Leaving Papenburg, you will enter the Dutch province ‘Groningen’. The 16th century star-shaped fort, Bourtange, is only a few miles away. Make your way to Stadskanaal through lush marsh land, past massive farmsteads and restored Old-World water gates to Stadskanaal. Spend the night there.
Day 5: Stadskanaal - Groningen
Distance: approx. 45 km
Solitary cycling paths through thick forests, heather fields, moor and moss areas distinguish the Drenthe Province. Ride through idyllic villages to Zuidlaren, where you will be enamoured by the splendid Saxon farm houses and a Late Romanesque church. As you cycle the excellent paths along Lake Paterswoldsemeer, you’ll soon reach Groningen. Enjoy the liveliness of the city, the centre of North-east Netherlands. Spend the night in Groningen.
Day 6: Groningen – Delfzijl
Distance: approx. 60 km
Explore Groningen before continuing north and appreciate the serenity of the rural environment on your way to Delfzijl. Menkemaburg at Uithuizen is the most beautiful castle in the region. The charm of Appingedam, the old Frisian harbour city, has been affectionately maintained. Cycle on to Delfzijl on the banks of Damsterdiep Canal.
Day 7: Delfzijl – Emden
Distance: approx. 50 km
Cycle along the Dollard Bay to Ditzum. Take the ferry (fare payable on-site) to Petkum and cycle to Emden. Alternative route: Take the ferry from Delfzijl across the Dollard Bay to Knock and cycle to Emden.
Day 8: Departure from Emden
Depart after breakfast unless you booked an extended stay. Travellers are responsible for their homeward transportation.
