Cycling Tour: Elbe River Trail – Dresden to Dessau

8 Days / 309 km (192 m) / from 499 €

The Elbe River Trail is one of Germany's most popular Cycle Trails. You decide which part of it you wanna ride. It is hard to give a recommendation, as there is simply so much to explore and see. If it is nature or culture everything is so close, just like the Dresdner Frauenkirche, Meissen porcelain, the wines of Saxony, Luther in Wittenberg, the bauhaus in Dessau or the Hundertwasser in Magdeburg, it can't get boring! At the Elbe sandstone mountains you can change form the bike to your walking boots or you just dwell in one of the Cafés and enjoy a typical Saxony cake "Eierschnecke". Come and discover your very own Elbe RiverTrail!

Travelroute

Day 1: Arrival in Dresden

Dresden, also known as “Florence on the Elbe River”, is a cultural metropolis in Saxony. The view from the river towards the city is gorgeous. The Frauenkirche, ‘Church of Our Lady’, Brühlsche Terrasse, nicknamed ‘The Balcony of Europe’, the Semperoper Opera House and Zwinger Palace are just a few points of interest worth visiting. Spend the night in Dresden.

Day 2: Dresden – Elbe Sandstone Mountains

Distance: approx. 46 km

Today’s excursion is to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Cycle along the Elbe past the Albrecht Palace and enjoy the beauty of the former royal vineyards. Cross the suspension bridge, called the ‘Blue Wonder’, and continue on to Pirna. On the way you will pass the Pillnitz Palace and Gardens. You may want to visit the town hall on the market square in Pillnitz and admire its Renaissance architecture. Continue on through the Elbe Valley past Wehlen and on to the spa town of Rathen. Possibly walk up to the medieval castle and bastion. Take the ferry across the Elbe to Königstein (fare payable on-site). Crown your day with coffee or tea and a piece of cake on the promenade in Bad Schandau. Travellers are responsible for their own transportation by S-Bahn (commuter train) back to Dresden.

Day 3: Dresden - Meissen

Distance: approx. 26 km

The Karl May Museum (Karl May was one of Germany’s best selling authors in the 19th and 20th century) is in Radebeul. On your way to Meissen it would be worth your while to leave the cycling paths and cycle through the vineyards. You may want to take a nice break to enjoy a delicious glass of wine in one of the rustic inns. A visit to the stately Meissen Porcelain Factory and the Albrecht Castle is a must. Stay overnight in or near Meissen.

Day 4: Meissen - Riesa/Strehla

Distance: approx. 27-37 km

Ride along Germany’s northernmost vineyards to Diesbar-Seusslitz. Near the baroque castle and grounds are several places to stop in for a bite to eat and taste regional wines. Continue on past the former steel city of Riesa and on to Strehla. Strehla is an idyllic small city with over 1000 yrs of history. Spend the night in Riesa or Strehla.

Day 5: Riesa/Strehla - Torgau

Distance: approx. 44-54 km

During WWII the United States Army and Soviet forces met on the Elbe River Bridge in Torgau. On your way to Torgau you will cycle through Mühlberg where you may want to visit the Cistercian monestary. Enjoy the beautiful park in Trebnitz. Have a lovely evening and spend the night in Torgau.

Day 6: Torgau - Wittenberg

Distance: approx. 37-71 km

Along the Elbe on your way to Wittenberg you will pass Lichtenberg Castle and go through Pretsch. You may want to visit the ‘Lutherhalle’, the largest Reformation exhibition. Imagine walking in Martin Luther’s footsteps. Stay overnight in Wittenberg.

Day 7: Wittenberg - Dessau

Distance: approx. 41-75 km

Cross the Elbe into Wörlitz. Wörlitzer Park was the first English landscaped park in continental Europe. It was created in the late 18th century under the regency of Duke Leopold III of Anhalt-Dessau and is 142 km² (54.8 sq mi). On your way to Dessau you can either cycle along the Elbe or through the little baroque city of Oranienbaum. The House of Ascania onced resided in Dessau. The city's acclaim stems from the renowned ‘Bauhaus’ architectural design movement which combined crafts and fine arts. Stay the night in or near Dessau.

Day 8: Departure from Dessau

Depart after breakfast. Travellers are responsible for their own transportation home.
