Day 1: Arrival in Cottbus
Travellers are responsible for their own transportation to Cottbus. The metropolitan city in the Lausitz region is one of Germany’s greenest cities with several parks. The Branitz Park, laid out by Prince Pückler, the castle, the pyramids, and the old town with its fortress and fascinating architecture are definitely worth seeing. There are many restaurants to choose from to round out your evening. We look forward to welcoming you in Cottbus and answering any questions you may have regarding your tour. You can pick up your rental bike before 5 pm. Spend the night in Cottbus.
Day 2: Cottbus – Lübbenau
Distance: approx. 45-58
Leaving Cottbus, cycle through Branitz Park. Today’s destination is Vetschau located on the edge of the Spree Forest. The unique Wendish-German “double-church” is a great point of interest in Vetschau. The Protestant church consists of two naves standing side by side, with a common tower and vestry. Spend the night in or near Vetschau.
Day 3: Vetschau – Lübbenau
Distance: approx. 48-77 km
Today’s leg of the tour takes you through the green labyrinth of the Spree forest. Pass innumerable streams as you cycle through the forest to Lübbenau. Plan an excursion to the small village Lehde with its beautiful lagoon. Many farm houses are reachable only by pedestrian bridges or by boat. Relax in one of the many quaint pubs or restaurants. The open air museum is worth a visit. Stay overnight in or near Lübbenau.
Day 4: Lübbenau – Lübben
Distance: approx. 61-64 km
Cycle directly to Lübben via the Spree dam. There will be ample time for a boat ride or for an excursion to the castle where you will find interesting information about Niderlausitz and the Spree Forest. If you prefer to cycle a bit more, you can take the alternative route to the small island of Wotschofska or through the ‘Schlabendorf Fields’, formerly used for mining, and visit the moated castle in Drehna. Spend the night in or near Lübben.
Day 5: Lübben – Krausnick / Schlepzig
Distance: approx. 35 km
Cycle leisurely through tranquil surroundings on less travelled trails. Today’s destination is Krausnick or Schlepzig. From there you can make an excursion to Lake Neuendorf or the Krausnicker Mountains (hills). Stay overnight in Krausnick or Schlepzig.
Day 6: Krausnick / Schlepzig – Burg
Distance: approx. 29 km
Cycle along the Spree, through fields, and past fishing ponds. After reaching Lübben, continue through the serene forest and meadows of the biosphere reserve. You may want to take a small detour through Alt Zauche to Straupitz and visit the church conceptualized by the late architect, Schinkel. The linseed oil mill is also a great point of interest. Spend the night in or near Burg.
Day 7: Burg – Cottbus
Distance: approx. 44 km
Pass the Bismark Tower on your way to the Spree River and follow the course of the river to Cottbus. Take a break in the old fortress city of Peitz, widely known for its carp ponds and local history museum, ‘Hüttenmuseum’. Stay overnight in Cottbus.
Day 8: Departure from Cottbus
Turn in your rental bike and depart after breakfast. Travellers are responsible for their homeward transportation.
