Cycling Tour: Main River Cycle Route - Kulmbach to Aschaffenburg

12 Days / 505 km (314 m) / from 879 €

Follow the winding Main River through the Franconian Region, from the “Caesar City” of Bamberg to Würzburg, merry with wine, through the Spessart low mountain range, and to Aschaffenburg. Kulmbach is known for its beer, Bamburg was once a city of caesars, Würzburg was once a royal city, Miltenberg is characterised by its alleys and timber-framed houses, Ochsenfurt has an impressive medieval fortress, and Aschaffenburg is considered to be a cosmopolitan city. Rustic beer gardens and Franconian wine parlours await you.

Day 1: Arrival in Kulmbach

Travellers are responsible for their transportation to Kulmbach. Take a stroll through Kulmbach, famous for its Plassenburg Castle which houses the largest tin soldier museum in the world, and for its famous sausages, "Bratwürste". Spend the night in Kulmbach.

Day 2: Kulmbach - Bad Staffelstein

Distance: approx. 45 km

The Red Main and White Main rivers meet near Mainleus nestled between the Franconian Forest and Jura. Cycle on trails through the tranquil forest and meadows. Strössendorf Castle deserves a visit. The Banz Abbey (approx. 3 km / 1.8 mi) and the world famous Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (approx. 8 km / 5 mi) are situated on the hill. Bad Staffelstein offers a very nice spa center called the Obermain-Therme. Spend the night in Bad Staffelstein.

Day 3: Bad Staffelstein - Bamberg

Distance: approx. 40 km

Take your time cycling through the Franconian countryside on your way to Bamberg and keep your camera ready. Enjoy the beauty of the small things such as blooming meadows, fruit trees, and quaint villages. Enjoy today's highlight, the city of Bamberg, and spend the night there.

Day 4: Bamberg - Hassfurt

Distance: approx. 40 km

Perhaps you'd like to take a stroll through the City on Seven Hills and enjoy the view from the Geyerwörth Castle Tower. The grape vines are beautiful. The cosy little timber-framed city of Zeil am Main depicts the charm of times past. If you're up for some inclines and an extra 10 km / 6 mi long stretch, then a visit to Königsberg is for you. Hassfurt lies at the feet of the Hassberg Hills. Spend the night in Hassfurt.

Day 5: Hassfurt - Volkach

Distance: approx. 55 km

The WWII ball-bearing factory, Schweinfurter Kugellagerwerke, is located in Schweinfurt. Cycle on the well built Main River Cycle Route in the Franconian wine country. The scenery varies as you make your way to Volkach. Just before Volkach you may like to visit the church with the "Madonna im Rosenkranz". Enjoy local cuisine and spend the night.

Day 6: Volkach - Würzburg

Distance: approx. 65 km

The Main River bends near Volkach. Cycle from there through shadowy river meadows to several wine towns. Dettelbach with its well preserved city wall is quite romantic. Kitzingen's landmark is the Leaning Tower, the Falterturm. Marktbreit has many charming houses. Würzburg is situated between the vineyards, and the Marienberg Fortress rises above it. Outstanding sights include the Würzburg Residence, St. Kilian's Cathedral, the city hall, and the historic ensemble of the Gothic Marienkapelle and Falkenhaus on the market square. Spend the night in Würzburg.

Day 7: Würzburg – Marktheidenfeld

Distance: approx. 40-80 km

The choice is yours. You can either cycle the longer flat route along the foothills of vineyards to Zellingen, Karlstadt, Gemünden, Lohr am Main, and Marktheidenfeld (approx. 80 km / 50 mi) – To shorten the route by approx. 40 km / 25 mi, take the train. Or, take the hilly route (approx. 50 km / 31 mi) through small towns and villages. No matter which route you choose, there is plenty to see along the way - the romantic small city of Karlstadt with its interesting history, the Three-River-City of Gemünden in the Spessart Nature Reserve, Lohr am Main with historic Franconian timber-framed houses, and the tranquillity of the small villages in the country. Crown your day with shopping or a relaxing evening in Marktheidenfeld.

Day 8: Marktheidenfeld - Miltenberg

Distance: approx. 55 km

Cycle through river landscape to Wertheim. Count van Wertheim's castle ruins are situated on the hill above the picturesque Old Town. Stadtprozelten lies behind the next river bend where the Henneburg Castle ruins rise above the city. Miltenberg is a dream for lovers of timber-frame architecture.

Day 9: Raum Miltenberg – Aschaffenburg

Distance: approx. 45 km

Practically surrounded by vineyards, cycle to Klingenberg and the "Spessart Metropole", Aschaffenburg. The Johannisburg Castle can be seen from the distance.

Day 10: Departure from Aschaffenburg

Distance: approx. 50 km

Princes once esteemed Aschaffenburg as the perfect summer residence in the Spessart due to the relatively mild local climate, as well as its Mediterranean gardens that overlook the Main River. Depart after breakfast. Travellers are responsible for their homeward transportation.

11. Tag: Raum Offenbach - Mainz

Distance: approx. 50 km
