Northern Holland

6 Days / 213 km (132 m) / from 339 €

Travelroute

Day 1: Arrival in Purmerend

Travellers are responsible for their transportation to the hotel in Purmerend. Just relax or go golfing at the nearby golf course.

Day 2: Edam and Hoorn

Distance: approx. 60 km

The city of Edam was founded near a dam crossing the IJe River. Around 1230 Edam grew as a trade town. Thanks to the city rights given in 1357 a harbour and as many as 33 wharfs were built. Edam's market three times every year provided a big boost for the local economy. The inner city is picturesque.

Continue to Hoorn known as 'The Pearl of Lake IJssel". After the founding of the Dutch East India Company in 1602 it grew to international importance. Hoorn's fortunes declined somewhat in the eighteenth century but became a market for the entire West Frisian agricultural region. There are many historic buildings to visit there. Cycle from there through Zeevang.

Day 3: Beemster Polder

Distance: approx. 47 km

The Beemster Polder was created from 1609 to 1612. The well-ordered landscape of fields, roads, canals, dykes and settlements, laid out in accordance with classical and Renaissance planning principles, were well preserved. The entire Beemster polder has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999.

The villages of Graft and De Rijp were founded in the Middle Ages and became important cities in the 17th century for sailors, fishermen, and whale catchers. De Rijp seems more like an open-air museum with its wood gabled houses on canals and streets. The town hall (est. 1630), weighing house, and church are all worth visiting.

Day 4: Volendam and Amsterdam

Distance: approx. 60 km

Certain customs are different in Volemdam than in the rest of the Netherlands. They even have their own dialect. You may like to take an excursion by ferry to Marken where you can enjoy a fantastic outlook onto Lake Gouw and Marken Island. Continue on to Amsterdam and visit sights such as the royal palace.

Day 5: Zaanse Schans

Distance: approx. 46 km

The village of Zaanse Schans located in Zaanstad exhibits an open-air museum depicting the historic legacy of the Netherlands. The museum includes houses and shops such as the Albert Heijn chain. The Zaans Museum gives insight into the development of the Zaanstreek industry. Overal admission is free, but there is an admission fee for the individual mills and sights. Cycle through the De Wijde Wormer Polder.
